On the first day of the invasion, the museums in Ukraine began the process of sealing windows with plywood. Now all of those exhibits have been moved to an underground bomb shelter. While the sound of an air-raid siren blared, the museums directors described how the institutions had evacuated “the most valuable part of the collection” in the first few days of the war. Though most museums and galleries were shut down in the wake of the initial Russian invasion, Ukrainian cultural workers have struggled to save artworks and artifacts that remain exposed to the attacks. Digital technologies play a vital role for the preservation of Ukrainian and Europe’s cultural heritage.
